Life is full of ongoing changes and transitions. Youth today are faced with a myriad of challenges, as technology has advanced and schedules have become increasingly hectic. Trying to build a family does not always come easily, and infertility is much more than a medical diagnosis. It is a life-altering event that has effects on every aspect of one’s life. Pregnancy and the birth of a new baby is often viewed as a time full of joy, love, and bonding; however, this time can also be stressful and difficult leading to approximately 1 in 7 moms and 1 in 10 dads experiencing significant levels of anxiety and/or depression. Finally achieving that family, does not mean blissful joy at all times; keeping a balance and maintaining self-identity does not come easily. Some of these moments are more difficult than others. I am here to offer help during the more trying times.
I use a relational developmental approach to psychotherapy. This means that I get to know you as a whole person, while taking into account the challenges of your phase of life. I then help to guide you in learning more positive coping skills as you process your life experiences and explore how to develop and maintain healthy relationships. All of this is done within the context of a non-judgmental supportive therapeutic relationship.

In a way, therapy is very simple. We just sit and talk to each other. On another level, it’s not simple at all. We work together to figure out why you are getting stuck and how to get you un-stuck—a process that takes time and care. On a deeper level still, I accompany you—walk beside you—come what may. Sometimes just having someone be alongside you as you go through life, with no particular goal of changing you, can transform things the most.
I’ve worked with people from all different walks of life—folks who are barely making ends meet and folks with big houses; transgender women and nonbinary folks; people who identify as conservative and radical leftists. I am especially interested in working with people who feel trapped in some way—whether literally trapped by incarceration; trapped by things you have done or things that have been done to you; trapped by poverty or feelings of hopelessness.
At the moment, I specialize in working with men, but I will gladly talk to clients of all genders about the possibility of working together.
I grew up in a male-dominated context, and have worked as a therapist, chaplain, and teacher with clients in jails, universities, the streets, in small towns, cities, and in the arts. It isn’t easy for any of us to be human, and men have particular struggles they often don’t have anyone to talk about.
If you think we might be a good fit, I offer a free conversation where we can get to know each other a little bit and consider working together.

Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, Tamie worked as a university chaplain; a college instructor; and a book editor specializing in books about war, drugs, incarceration, and race in America. For 30 years, Tamie has been writing essays about violence, beauty, wilderness, hard work, sex, and whether it’s actually possible for men and women (and all humans) to love each other well.

Navigating life as a professional, finding (and maintaining) healthy and meaningful relationships, and parenthood can all be joyous and rewarding experiences. It can also bring forth unique challenges and pressures. Do you struggle with feeling disconnected from yourself or others? Do you prioritize everyone else's needs before your own? Do you wonder if life should simply feel better? Happier? Now more than ever, people are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and uncertain about how they are supposed to manage their relationships, careers, and lives. Ignoring your needs can lead to
long-term consequences for your mind & body.
I utilize an individual and psycho-dynamic approach throughout the therapeutic process. Together, we will identify and prioritize your strengths and use them to help you practice steps towards your treatment goals. I'll help you develop a plan and practice it, while we celebrate your successes along the way.
Supporting people just like you is my goal, with compassion and professionalism in equal measure. I value and trust in the power of the professional relationship. This foundation will result in each patient feeling seen and heard. Everyone has a unique story and experience, I want to hear it.

Mid-Atlantic is a web-based psychotherapy practice offering online therapy and counseling sessions. Our focus is to help individuals tune in, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. We achieve this by providing a safe space, listening to your concerns, and customizing a treatment plan. We start with understanding where you are today and the unique challenges you face.
